At the same time we have selected Microsoft based approach as the proving ground for compatibility. While TICA is transparent to various document formats we maintain compatibility with Microsoft products, including Microsoft Visual Studio for development.
NATO C3 Technical Architecture (NC3TA) applies to NATO Common Funded (NCF) projects, as well as to nations who are encouraged to enhance their systems design to improve interoperability. As stated in NC3TA, at the moment we are living in a world where:
• Strict adherence to standards can inhibit the effective exploitation of Information Technology.
• Commercial Microsoft and other products may effectively meet user requirements and reduce complexity and costs of CIS realisation.
• Commercial aspects have become the key IT market driver and de facto standards based on Microsoft and others have taken the lead over de jure standards.
• Open standards by definition, address a wide range of potential use, depending on customisable options, a growing part of which are often declared “implementation defined”.
• Products frequently tend to pre-exist any standards, because of commercial diversity, and there is often no other option than to select a particular product.
The NC3TA development takes these experiences into account and aims to improve, complement and complete the approach based solely on standards in order to address the existing gap between system design and implementation stages (the NIE approach). It has produced a list of products that have been shown to implement the selected standards.
NC3 Common Operating Environment (NCOE) Basket of Products contains Office Automation Approvals. Microsoft Office 2000, 2003 and XP are among the approved ones. Also Adobe Acrobat 5.0 and WinZip 8.0 are approved. TICA document transfer supports the file formats created and understood by these products. In order to maintain compatibility with older systems TICA is also able to send and receive other formats, which are in common use.
TICA Client (TICAC) is fully functional for document creation, transfer and retrieval in the most demanding field environment. TICA Server (TICAS) handles all documentation common to daily operations, including the .doc and .rtf or .pdf and other formats.
